093 - Planning the 2017 Spring Turkey Hunting Trip
Thursday Aug 04, 2016
Thursday Aug 04, 2016
In this week's episode, I let you in on the beginning stages of my planning the 2017 spring turkey hunting trip out of state.
This year, my buddies and I plan on hunting in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. 4 of us killing a bird in each state will take a great deal of luck and skill as well as a great deal of careful planning before we ever leave home.
Over the next couple of episodes, I'm going to take you through the process of planning next year's hunt with me. From talking to wildlife biologists, park rangers, and NWTF biologists to choosing dates to ironing out the logistics of the hunt, you will get to hear exactly what my buddies and I go through in planning one of the incredible hunts that we do each year.

091 - The World Deer and Turkey Expo Interviews
Thursday Jul 21, 2016
Thursday Jul 21, 2016
This week I have a couple of new and exciting products that I want to introduce to you in the World Deer and Turkey Expo interviews that I conducted this past weekend.
In this episode, you will hear of a great new product that I think all of us turkey hunters will want to check out. Phil Bullock with Bunkerhead joins me to discuss the Bunkerhead facemask system. The Bunkerhead system effectively keeps your facemask off of your face by clipping onto the bill of your ball cap. This system is great for those turkey hunters who do not like the feel of a facemask on their noses and faces, but it is also good for those hunters who wear eyeglasses.
I also interview Tom Hurlburt with Knockdown Outdoors about their new smartphone application that acts as a digital signout board for your hunting property. This awesome new app has a text feature built into it that will enable you to text with your hunting buddies through the app as well as weather and wind direction. I highly recommend you download the Knockdown Outdoors app from iTunes and the Google store and test drive this new application that can help to keep you safe while in the woods as well.
Lastly, I put my phone down for 30 seconds while at the show, and Son of the South, Josh Carney, commandeers it. Join Josh as he takes you on an audio tour of The World Deer and Turkey Expo. Also, hear Josh duplicate a seldom heard, rarely seen animal call upon my request. This is a world premiere of a call that Josh has never publicly made before, and you are going to hear it first here on The Turkey Hunter. This one will blow your mind and your speakers, so you may want to turn the volume down a bit towards the end of the interview.

089 - Wild Turkey Diseases with Heather Fenton
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
In today's episode, I am discussing wild turkey diseases with Heather Fenton with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens, GA.
Dr. Fenton discusses Avian Pox, Blackhead Disease, Lympho Proliferative Disease, Salmonella, and other diseases that affect wild turkeys. We also discuss the symptoms of the diseases, the causes of the diseases, and the mortality rates of turkeys that get the diseases.
In addition, we discuss the likelihood that those diseases can be spread to humans, precautions to take while handling a bird we suspect to be diseased (as well as birds that we are cleaning/processing), what to do if we harvest a bird that we suspect to be diseased.
While there is nothing we, as hunters, can do to cure a bird that is diseased, we can help to do a few things to prevent the further spread of these wild turkey diseases.
One of the ways that we can prevent the spread of diseases in wild turkeys is to avoid artificial feeding of birds. Artificially feeding wild turkeys concentrates birds into smaller areas for longer periods of time and increases the chances that an infected bird will come into contact with a healthy bird and potentially spread the disease within the flock.
The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study was founded in 1957 by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies to determine the cause of widespread die-offs of white-tailed deer.
Before the founding of SCWDS, little was known about diseases or sicknesses in wildlife. Sickness or death among wild animals spawned speculations, accusations, and wild myths. Not long after it was formed, SCWDS began to provide answers to many long-standing questions, and today it has grown to be a multipurpose wildlife disease research and study organization.

085 - Summer and Fall Plantings for Wild Turkeys with Scott Bronkema
Thursday Jun 09, 2016
Thursday Jun 09, 2016
In this episode, we are talking about summer and fall plantings for wild turkeys with Scott Bronkema, with Boneyard Seed, LLC.
Ensuring that the wild turkeys on your property have enough food to eat year round, will go a long way to helping to make sure that you have turkeys to hunt during the fall and spring seasons.
Chicory, chufa, peas, clovers, and grains are all great foods for turkeys and will not only help to draw turkeys onto your property but will help to keep them there. Before those seeds and grains are planted, making sure your soil is in ideal condition is critical to the success of your plantings. Another consideration for a great summer or fall food plot is proper fertilization as well.
Scott and I discuss all of the above this week, so please listen in.
